The Artistic Ensemble “Polytropon” (Artistic Director: Panagiotis Ant. Andriopoulos) presents the event entitled “A Passion Hymn for Dionysios Solomos” on Monday, 9 February 2026, at 7:00pm, at the Lecture Hall of the Music Library of the Association “The Friends of Music,” at the Athens Concert Hall (Megaron Mousikis Athinon).
The event will be held on World Greek Language Day, observed on 9 February, the day commemorating the great poet Dionysios Solomos. World Greek Language Day was established in 2017 by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was ratified by UNESCO in 2025, with the aim of highlighting the timeless contribution of the Greek language to world culture.

Settings of poetry by Dionysios Solomos by Greek composers Theodoros Spathis, Georgios Kazasoglou, Dimitris Minakakis (first performance), Giorgos Kouroupos, Giovani Stavraca, and Elena Pavlea, performed by:

– Marios Kazas, piano
Among the musical settings are poems by Solomos written by the poet himself in Italian. These will be heard in Greek translation, together with poems dedicated to Dionysios Solomos by the Zakynthian poet Panagiotis Kapodistrias.

Ensemble “Polytropon”
Founded in 2004 by theologian and musician Panagiotis Ant. Andriopoulos, the Artistic Ensemble “Polytropon” presents in Greece and abroad original productions based primarily on Greek poetry and music.
Among them: “The Patriarch’s Notebook” (settings of poetry from the youthful anthology of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew), “The Cavafy of the Patriarch,” “Priestly Poetry,” The Musical Work of Eva Palmer-Sikelianos, “The Gustav Mahler of Manos Hadjidakis,” “The ‘Arapia’ of Vassilis Tsitsanis, Matsis Chatzilazarou, Nikos Skalkottas and Manos Hadjidakis,” “The Cavafy of Syria and the Middle East,” “The Music of the Christians of the Middle East,” “The Fiery Tongues of Giannis Christou,” “Composers of Patras – Poets of Patras,” “Female Angels – Women who lived as ascetics in male monasteries,” “Kostis Palamas of Two Patriarchs” (Greek and Arabic), “Upon the Mountains of Ararat” (Greek–Armenian concert), “The Nostalgic Woman” by Alexandros Papadiamantis, “The Ecclesiastical Compositions of Mikis Theodorakis,” Greek–Arabic Concert, “The Song of the Exodus” (for Messolonghi), Mikis Theodorakis le Français.
The ensemble has also organised events and tributes dedicated to Saint Michael Choniates, the Olive Tree, Nikos Skalkottas, Lykourgos Angelopoulos, Maria Hors, Koula Pratsika, Athos Dimoulas, the poet Fr. Panagiotis Kapodistrias, Andrei Tarkovsky, the Russians of the Diaspora, Dmitri Shostakovich, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Nikolai Berdyaev, the tenor of the Greek National Opera Giannis Christopoulos, the violinist Giorgos Lebesis, among others.
Its productions have been presented in many cities in Greece, as well as in Cyprus, Germany, and Constantinople.
During the period 2017–2019, the ensemble collaborated with the renowned flamenco choreographer and dancer Israel Galván. Within the framework of documenta 14 (Athens and Kassel), it participated in the production La farsa monea and subsequently in Galván’s production La fiesta, touring internationally (Grec Festival Barcelona, Avignon Festival, and performances in Luxembourg, Montpellier, Porto, and elsewhere).
