Από την άλλη, Ιταλοί μουσικοδιδάσκαλοι, όπως ο περίφημος βιολιστής Tiveri, μετακαλούνται στην Πάτρα για να διδάξουν την μουσική στους γόνους των αστικών οικογενειών της πόλης. Κάποιοι αναλαμβάνουν την διεύθυνση σημαντικών θεσμών που ιδρύονται αυτή την εποχή, όπως η «Φιλαρμονική Εταιρεία – Ωδείο Πατρών».
From the mid-19th century, due to the growth of trade and the presence of a sizeable community of Catholics, Patras comes in direct cultural exchange with Italy, mainly adopting musical influences. Musicians from Patras travel to musical centres in Italy (Bologna, Milan, Naples, and elsewhere), in order to perfect their studies and initiate themselves into the musical currents of the time more easily. There they print their first musical compositions (usually on Italian verses) and some of them perform their works on tours. These musicians, who come in contact with the Italian musical reality, are not necessarily natives of Patras, they live, however, and work for a long time in Patras moulding the local musical life. Among them, Joseph Liberalis, a music teacher of Italian descent from Corfu, lives and acts in Patras for 16 years as an instructor of the piano. Many of his compositions have been printed in Milan by the famous musical publishing house Ricordi, while the newspapers of the time refer to his works with complimentary comments. In Milan the compositions of one of Liberalis’ most important students, Chariklia Bogdanou, who, too, pursued her musical studies in Italy, are also printed by the publishing house Ricordi. In Milan young Constantinos Porfiropoulos studies the piano and composition on a scholarship of the Municipality of Patras; after returning to his native town, Porfiropoulos participates in the choir of the Catholic church. Other significant musicians from Patras in the late 19th and early 20th century are Dimitris Lialios, who composes Lieder on Italian verses, Dimitrios Stellakatos, who travels to Rome, and, finally, Eleni Lambiri, the poet Andreas Laskaratos’ granddaughter, who gives a series of concerts in Italy with compositions of hers on Italian poetry; in Patras Lambiri directs the “Philarmonic Society” for 25 years. On the other side, Italian music teachers, such us the eminent violinist Tiveri, are invited to Patras in order to teach music to the offspring of the urban families of the city. Some of them undertake the direction of significant institutions founded at the time, such as the “Philarmonic Society - Conservatory of Patras”. The Austrian Albert Andlouvich from Trieste directs and organises the Band of Patras in an exemplary way, as the conductor of which he takes part in the musical events of the first Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens. Andlouvich composed works for band and church music, as well. Church music is composed for the needs of the choir of the Catholic church by Sotirios Greck –a Catholic born in Athens, who played a leading part in the foundation of the musical association “Orpheus”–, as well as by his friend, Michele Cornello –an Italian composer, who maintained a musical publishing house in the centre of Patras and published scores of contemporary musicians from Patras, such as Antigoni Papamikropoulou. References to the musical activity of Patras can be found in Italian magazines. The role of the community of Catholics in the musical life of the city should, at last, be stressed, not only with respect to the choir of St. Andrew’s Catholic church, but also with regard to the presence of capable Italian music teachers in Catholic schools.
